From the moment I have met border collies for the first time, I knew that sooner or later I will just have to own one. I've gained much experience with Joy and after some time chose to get her puppy after helping also to make decision of the father, Jerry. Although I have had the first choice in litter, I took the only bluemerle male available.

To be honest, Ice wasn't the most attractive nor active puppy in the litter. But somehow I fell in love with him anyway. People also poked me, that he looked more of an Aussie. I didn't care. But wait to see his change through the oncoming years ...

I took him to puppy school, led by a good friend, Silvia Trkman and immediately after that to advanced course, that led to basic obedience exam (ISB-BBh), led by another friend, Polona Bonač. We have passed the exam with an excellent score of 100% and had much fun with all the tricks we have learned meanwhile.

We have also started with agility soon after; but due to my lack of time for training, we haven't gotten far. Well, to be honest, we needed quite some time to achieve all the exams for A2 together with Tina. We also attend some sheep herding - just to keep Ice in touch with border collie's true nature. He also attends Rally Obedience, at the moment he competes in RO-II class with Tina.

So - the most important part - how would I describe my Ice. First of all - he is always my loyal and faithful companion. It doesn't matter, if I am away for a few minutes or a day - when I return, he greets me like I've been away for infinity. He wigs his whole body, the tail banging against his head, his lips curling upwards, showing some of his white teeth and - crashing with all his speed into me - tries to kill me with his licking. Resisting it is completely futile...

He also loves being caressed. Being on his back either on the lap, on the floor and, rarely, on the bed, he presses against you and hums with pleasure. In the house (not being provoked, of course) he finds one of his favourite spots - either his small bed, under the curtains (with them falling over his head, looking like a bride) or in some cooler corner close to me - and falls asleep. He has had some of his kill'n'destroy phases in his puppyhood when left unattended, of course, but they are far over now.

But wait till you let him outside. There he becomes literally the opposite of a peaceful, boring, lazy dog - he just loves to run and ... well ... to work. Almost always together with Mak, he always keeps him in his "herding range". Also cats, rabbits and guinea pigs well suit the role of sheep just fine... If none available, a stick or a toy will also do the trick.

He also guards his territory well - he doesn't care, if people pass our home, as long as they don't cross the line of what he deems for his territory or stop and look over the fence. Then he starts warning with loud bark, notifiying possible "intruders" to keep away. But to people next to me he's always friendly - he doesn't move away, doesn't show unease or aggresiveness. He is, due to his bad experience with small children, a bit afraid of them, so he rather moves away.

Ice definitely is a dog, that requires a whole person. Taking him for a walk twice a day and let him find his own business meanwhile just won't do. Neglect him and you will find he has many quailities. He is a well trained gardener (he should add some finesses to his work, especcially with cutting the hedges, replanting flowers), sometimes he even tries to make me rich by searching for crude oil... He effectively recycles much of his "forgotten" toys and he tries to redecorate his kennel, making it look more natural (i.e. removing unneccesary paint and brushed wood from the entrance). But as far as I am concerned, he is a border collie in its pure essence...

Ice is also a proud father of one litter with Katja's Criss, of which you can find more information here - click.
